Luxemburg
Saint Michael Church
The St Michael Church is the oldest church in
Luxembourg. Its origin and history are closely
linked to the destiny of the city of Luxem-
bourg. In 987, archbishop Egbert of Trier
consecrated a first church near the fortified
castle that Count Siegfried had just erec-
ted upon the Bock promontory. Throughout
the centuries, this place of worship was
destroyed several times, but always rebuilt,
transformed and extended. The turbulent
history of the building explains the presence
of elements of Romanesque, Gothic and
Baroque architecture. The current appea-
rance of the church dates back to its recons-
truction in 1687/1688, following the destruc-
tion caused by the siege of 1684. The coat of
arms decorated with fleurs-de-lis above the
portal is bearing reference to the royal patron
Louis XIV who authorised its restoration. The
church's interior is endowed with extremely
rich liturgical and artistic furnishings, reflec-
ting the worship practised by people over the
centuries.
