Fort Garry in 1881
#WCPIWednesday
In 1881, the unnamed creator of this image stood somewhere in what is today The Forks, looking west, to take this picture of Upper Fort Garry. That was ur-Main Street running along the wooden wall in view, which was soon to be straightened to align the bridge with infant Winnipeg's downtown, sealing the fort's fate.
In reference to the holiday this Province just enjoyed, this fort -- although already well in decline at the time of this photograph -- was the central stage of the Red River Rebellion in 1970 that led directly to the formation of our province.
