3033 : Clapham Junction

Driving coach No. 76358 of 4-VEP Class 423 unit No. 3033 stands at Clapham Junction 6 hours after this unit was hit by the following service.

 

Unit No. 3033 was the rear unit of 3 4-VEP units working the 07:18 Basingstoke to Waterloo service which had stopped at the signal waiting to enter the station.

 

The 06:06 Poole to Waterloo service, worked by a 4-REP and two 4-TC multiple units, collided with the Basingstoke train. A third train, carrying no passengers and worked by two four-car 4-VEP units, was passing on the adjacent line in the other direction and hit the wreckage.

 

The collision was caused by a signal failure due to a wiring fault.

 

35 people died, 69 were seriously injured and a further 415 received minor injuries.
