Chemical Compound Project

Objectives:

Near the end of our unit on chemical compounds, students will have to select a chemical compound and create a picture mosaice using flickr and submit it to our class group on flickr. Below their picture, students will have describe properties and interesting facts about their compounds. The purpose of this activity is to provide a fun and motivating way for students to understand the deeper, practical applications of chemical compounds, beyond what is covered in class. Further, they will gain experience with technology available through the internet, as well as using the web for research.

Procedure:

1.) Students will randomly select a chemical compound to do their flickr project on.

2.) Students will join our class flickr group and upload four pictures into a flickr mosaic (using flickr toys). Pictures must include images both at the molecular level as well as images of anything that their chemical compound is found/used in (practical use).

3.) In the "Description" area, every student must describe four properties of his/her compound, as well as at least three interesting facts, and at least two online sources of information (including URL link).

4.) Students must submit completed project to flickr group before the deadline.

If every requirement in the "Procedure" section is met, student will receive an "A" for the project. Grade will be lowered if any of the following is not met: 1.)Project is not submitted by the deadline. 2.)Student has less than 4 properties of his/her compound. 3.)Student has less than 3 interesting facts of his/her compound. 4.)Student does not have at least two online sources of information (including the URL link for that source).
