170 407 Dunfermline City 3.6.21

The 1890 structure that is Dunfermline City station plays host to a celebrity on the afternoon of 3rd June 2021. 170 407, seen here about to depart with 2G60, the 14.24 Cowdenbeath to Edinburgh, was at the time unique in Scotland in carrying a non-standard livery with vinyls advertising a phone text messaging incident service for the British Transport Police.

The station itself is another attractive piece of architecture, but gives the impression of being far too big for purpose, and one can almost envisage the tumbleweed blowing through it between departures. Likewise the location, which is an inconvenient half mile walk from the town centre if you are looking for lunch between trains. This happenstance dates from 1968 when Dunfermline Upper, on the former line to Stirling was closed. Prior to this City station was known as Dunfermline Lower, a name that better reflects its actual location.

Fortunately, for those not in need of a haggis supper, the verdant Dunfermline Public Park is immediately adjacent, and provides a pleasantly bosky backdrop for this tranquil scene.
