Rock orchid IMG_1038

King orchid, Dendrobium tarberi.

Epiphytic orchid which forms large congested clumps with erect litter-trapping roots and cylindrical, crowded, yellowish pseudo-bulbs, to 100x4cm, each tipped with 3-5 large thick dark green leathery leaves, to 25cmx8cm. Sturdy arching racemes, to 60 cm long carry 50-200 crowded strongly fragrant flowers to 2.5cm across.

Flowers: August-October

Distribution: QLD-NSW (south to Dungog)

Habitat: Cliff faces, gorges, boulders & large trees in moist to wet forests and rainforests.

Notes: This species, which can form massive clumps, is especially prominent in montane rainforest.
