Janitzio, Michoacan, Mexico.
Janitzio is a small volcanic island in the middle of Lake Pátzcuaro in the Mexican state of Michoacán. For centuries, the indigenous Purépechan have fished for white fish with special butterfly shaped nets. The lake has been overfished and while the fish recover the people have turned to tourism to earn income. Many shops line the narrow lanes, selling food and crafts to the many tourists that come by boat. There are no cars on the island, which makes walking very pleasant. At the top of the island is a concrete statue of Mexican independence fighter Jose Maria Morelos that is 156 feet high. One can go inside the statue and climb to the top and look out over the town and the lake. A relaxing half hour boat ride returns visitors to the mainland.
