Rebirth

Title: Rebirth

Year: 2015

Dimensions: various dimensions

medium: video installation and sculpture

Made in response to the organisation 'Hair For Hope' which raises funds for children with cancer, Rebirth is a video installation that questions society's norms of conventional beauty. Having experienced pressure to conform to these norms myself, I decided to remove something that is valued as the most important asset to a woman - her hair. Hair is beautiful when present on a person's head, but the lack of hair has connotations with illness and old age. The video plays on a wall with my hair present at the centre in a transparent box for all to see - this hair represents the 'shedding' of all my inhibitions and the sense of freedom that comes along with it. In Hinduism, the hair of newborn babies is shaved to remove all connections from their past life. Similarly, Rebirth represents me breaking free from societal conventions of beauty where being bald is beautiful too.
