Unacceptable Rypstra

A short minute, amalgamation of shots and videos from a Great Blue Heron nest that initially contained four chicks last spring, can be viewed at the following link: youtu.be/7mHaQUzFpWM
It was interesting to see how they interacted when the close quarters of one nest became a bit tiresome for one or more of the chicks.
One chick seemed to get unduly picked on. Though I did not capture it, a chick did fall out of the nest. It was captured while wandering around under the heron rookery, and although it was taken to a home to await pick-up the next morning to be transferred to a rescue shelter, it passed away during the night.
Another short minute 'movie' showing this nest and an Anna's Hummingbird nest during a windstorm, can be viewed here: youtu.be/lPn5ZWiJF5M
Both nests survived the windstorms shown.
The hummingbird nest was raided by a predator less than a week later.
The heron rookery is also in danger. As much as people in North Saanich purport they are for the environment, I know of two rookeries that were cut down. Another one that was started was threatened by development but saved at the last minute, only to be raided by Bald Eagles just before the chicks were ready to fledge.
This rookery is on private property belonging to a yacht club that suddenly decided a restaurant would be the perfect use of this small patch of trees; in spite of the fact that they have extensive land where trees were removed long ago. I'm sure the seasonal noise and stench were a factor in their decision.
The trees were in the process of coming down when several complaints to key people managed to halt the process for now. The herons have just begun their nesting season. It will be interesting to see what happens.
