09 29 2019 Dddddd (WS) First Searching

A Barred Owl we came across after sunset before attending the bird banding of Saw-whet Owls at Pedder Bay.

My husband heard a unique noise, and went down a little used trail leading to a creek to track it down. It was this owl that was whistling, for lack of a better descriptor. I never knew this species would make a call like that. I have since watched videos of parent owls making that particular call when 'talking' to their young, so it is now my belief, this parent owl was checking in with her fledged chick before starting the evening's hunt.

Worried it would fly away with our large and slightly noisy family, I didn't bother setting up the tripod, but upped the ISO instead.

She didn't mind our presence, and I kicked myself for not trying to set up the shot properly. The light was fading fast so it wasn't long before we backtracked up the trail, leaving her to her nightly duties.
