231 (2) Feeding Time

Apologies for those of you who may be eating breakfast or supper...

This is Cheetah, an immature Peregrine Falcon, bred and raised in captivity, and the same working bird that I have uploaded before. He is enjoying 1/3 of a raised quail for his lunch.

It is speculated that his black mask is there to prevent the glare of the sun from bothering his eyes as he comes out of the sun to chase prey. His sternum is built up to withstand hitting prey at 350 km/hr during his dive. If the prey isn't killed on impact, there is a special hook on his beak that can break the prey's spinal cord so the falcon isn't injured in flight trying to control struggling prey. (Victoria, BC).
