Garnet in Garnet schist

1.700 Ma meta sediment from the Beaver Dam mountains in Utah. This garnet shows the way garnets grow when the host rock is undergoing pressure metamorphosis. As the subduction depth increases, the pressure generated garnet fragments assemble themselves tightly interlocked with the existing garnet crystals (presumably the larger red crystal in the center). This type of garnet is used as abrasive, not suited fro gemstone use. Picture with iPhone 11 and smart phone microscope attachment
