Grey phalarope, 1st winter

Did you know?

phalaropes are just one of a few birds where the sexes roles are reversed. Hence, the females look more striking and colorful, whereas the males tend to be more duller. The females will even fight among themselves asto who will get which male. The female will then lay her eggs in a nest on the ground where the male and only the male will incubate and look after the eggs and chicks.

Phalaropes breed up in the Artic circle where summer is very short. It has been known that once all the males are occupied and the females have done their job, that the females will even lay and incubate some for herself. I suppose it's a way of making as many nests as possible to increase their chances of survival - besides, it makes an interesting twist for us to observe in the natural world too!
