Salt transportation in Danakil depression

Lake Karum (also known as Lake Assale or Asale) is a lake in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, situated in the northern end of the Danakil Depression. It lies at 115 m below sea level. This lake is extremely salty. Tigrean and Afar workers extract the salt, using, in the same place, the same tools as the quarrymen of the Queen of Sheba.

The transport of salt iup to Mekele takes five days by camel caravans, guided by Tigrean or Afar workers.

This picture was taken during a journey organised by BUSKA TOURS, Addis-Ababa.
