The red Torii gates in Kyoto

The Torii is an access portal to a sacred area. It represents a symbolic crossing point between the sacred and the profane, the human and divine world, and as such is placed on the path that leads inside a jinja (Shintoist shrine). Its basic structure consists of two vertical support columns and a horizontal pole on top and is frequently painted red.
