Theme: Birthday
Inside Greeting:
fun (fun), n., adj., v., funned, fun ning. —n. playfulness; merry play, amusement; joking. —Ancient Irish word derived from stories of Old Funigan, a mythological character who enjoyed life to the fullest, on his own or on special occasions with gatherings of friends and family.
What ever you do hope you have FUN on your birthday!
Back of Card Text:
Just for Fun: a Homemade Dictionary Game!
• Number of people: 3 or more—5 or 6 is best
• Materials: (1) A large dictionary—the bigger the better. If 8 or more are playing, use 2 dictionaries and divide the group (2) Blank sheets of paper and a pencil for everyone
• Playing the Game: Group chooses a reader and number of rounds (words chosen) to be played. Reader opens dictionary at random and chooses obscure word—one that no one will know. Reader reads just chosen word to the group, spells it, and reads it again. (If anyone in the group knows the word, they must confess it and another word is chosen.) Each player writes a believable definition for the word. While doing that, reader writes down the dictionary definition on the same type of paper the players are writing their definitions. When each player is ready, written definitions are handed to reader who reads each one aloud, including the real definition, numbering each as they’re read. Reader then records each player’s definition choice as they call them out.
• Scoring: 1 point for choosing the actual dictionary definition and 1 point for each person whose fictitious definition is chosen. (i.e., rewards for being correct and rewards for being creative!)
• Subsequent rounds change readers, or not.
(PS: if you thought the definition for fun in this card is legitimate, I get a point!)
