Small Copper larva (4th instar)

The importance of wearing the right coat!

This fourth instar larva (ca. 8-10 mm) perfectly matches the colour of its food plant (Common Sorrel). The tiny white warts that cover its body (visible if you view large), which only appear at the 4th instar stage, match the spots on the underside of the leaf. Presumably these add to its ability to evade any potential predator looking for a quick snack! (0606).
