THE REMAINS OF THE DAY

THE LAST FAREWELL – ROGER WHITTAKER

On this day I bid a last farewell

to a father who was not my blood

but a bond was made

and a promise held

and I was rescued from the flood

the tears that fell

were sweet enriched with salt

like an ocean swell

that fell into a well

of honey and the feelings felt

cannot be bought

for the value of such love

is more important

and more valuable than any amount of money

knowing the sun will no longer touch his face

and I will not see the sweetness of his smile again

I look upon the heavenly countenance of this place

and know that the sun will always follow even after so much rain.

My friends

I want that you will forget me just a little;

that I might be just a little less important to you,

so that in my absences you will not grieve for me.

I can no longer be here as often as I once was.

I have not the strength.

There is illness, pain and loss

and still more to come.

There is barely enough strength

to do the most rudimentary of things.

Each day I task myself to do

only what is the most important one thing to achieve that day

and I congratulate myself on doing that one small thing

and try hard not to beat myself up

on the other million things I did not do.

You are always in my heart.

You are never far from my thoughts.

I never will forget you.

In truth I love you …

Thank you for your kindness, understanding and patience.
