ETERNITY IS JUST THE START
I fell for you and tumbled down the mountain to your feet
In a single bless-ed moment I was high enough to touch the sky
then low enough to feel the earth beneath my feet
Tears ran down my cheeks as sudden as the April showers
broke through the sunshine of my daydreams
and pooled like blood from open wounds
that seeped amid the bowers
of ancient forest trees and brackened floors
as dry as dust and red like rust
where occasionally the sun reached down and touched the ground
and thunderous stormy skies cracked overhead and flashed
as lightning struck the canopy of memories that were locked away
until a Summer's day ended in a torrent of stinging raindrops
fat and shaped like pear drops that no longer tasted sweet
when the roughened sugared surface had dissolved
and left a smoother feel to soothe our hungry tongues
and relieve us of the broken moments of our dreams
when reality steeped in anxious whispered,
crumbling words that toppled from our lips
like buildings fell, condemned by dynamite and broken bricks
exploded from the dusty ground up to the bright blue skies
and shattered in a second raised to the ground
and dust of broken promises
and memories of what we could have been
dissipate in early morning mist and sticky cobwebs filled with dew
and cuckoo spit so pure and white and frothy
like our early morning coffee just the way you liked it
latte with two sugars to take away the bitterness
and soften all the words we couldn't speak
but caused our minds to blow and rumble
and bit our tongues to stop the grumble
that rose up out of darkness where only light should be
that final morning when you left without a single glance at me
your eyes downcast I could not see the pain
you spared me even then
and yet I sat and watched you carefully,
drinking in the last of you
that I would ever see and if you'd only raised your head just once
you would have seen yourself mirrored in my bright blue eyes
and unshed tears giving out the faintest glimmer of one last hope
would it have been enough and is it right for me to question now
what could have been, what might have been if only
you had had the courage to stand and face your demons
and I would have found the strength to face mine too
and together we could have stood there side by side
and fight together for love and freedom from the clutches
of a world that never understood us and where we were only
treading water until the day when we would both be free
but now without you here I am weak and suffer more
but still I hold you in my heart
though I can't hold you in my arms
and if you appeared before me now I would give you all I am
and ask for nothing in return but if I never see you here again
I pray and wish for you a life
much better than the one you left behind
and hope with all my heart that you found
someone else who cares
for you and makes each moment
like a dream we once shared together
and if I can wish this much for you I could wish it for me too
and finally I could let you go
and you could release me from this pain
I wonder if the choice will ever be ours
or will fate and destiny decide
but all I know is what I know now
and all I have is what I have now
and if that is not enough
then I will leave behind a legacy of sorrow
but that would never do for me,
because I want for you the sweetest of tomorrows
and in my mind I see you dancing free along the sands of time that never once belonged to me
but was only mine on loan for moments not eternity
and satisfied with this I blow a final kiss
into the winds of changing time
and hope one day you'll find me
if not in this life then in the next
for I believe we act and play our roles eternally and divine
each lifetime lived a little further to the end of line
until one day several lifetimes from the here and now
we will finally see an end to the greatest story
of love and devotion ever found
and relinquish the tight grip we have
upon a world that never understood
how two people such as us
could ever have loved and found such wonder
in each other and all the beauty
that surrounded us even when we parted
we had other things to see, to do,
increase our knowledge, learn and teach
and often this meant not being within each others reach
but silently and softly as we tread our final path
our souls are one, our hearts beat time, we face each other one last time and laugh
as we dissolve into the ether
and blow with warm winds to another world
more beautiful than the one we left so many times before
and we float with angels wings
upon the clouds so soft as eider down
and look down upon the earth
where once as mortals given birth
we lived and loved so many life times together and apart
but now at journey's end eternity is just the start
of something better than could ever have been dreamed
and all the pain and sadness leave us
and now we feel no pain
we can rejoice in certainty that everything that went before
was bravely fought and valiantly endured, was necessary
so we could reach this final point
of love and understanding for all eternity.
