Renowned for the vast diversity of restaurants, Tooting also offers a rich variety of the most amazing sari shops; A sari, saree, or shari is a female garment from the Indian subcontinent that consists of a drape varying from five to nine yards (4.5 metres to 8 metres) in length and two to four feet (60 cm to 1.20 m) in breadth that is typically wrapped around the waist, with one end draped over the shoulder, baring the midriff. There are various styles of sari draping, the most common being the Nivi style, which originated in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Some sarees for everyday wear are simply printed while others are very heavy with gold and silver embroidery and are for special occasions like parties or weddings. The prices range from a few pounds to hundreds of pounds.Sarees come in many

colours and many varieties of designs and materials.Some materials are synthetic like American georgette, woolly goergette etc and are imported from Japan.Printed silk and heavy silk sarees are imported from India and Banaras.The other heavy embroided sarees are imported from France,Italy and Swittzerland.

 

The sari has gained its popularity internationally because of the growth of Indian fashion trends globally. Many Bollywood celebrities, like Aishwarya Rai have worn it at international events representing the Indian culture. In 2010, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone wanted to represent her country at an international event, wearing the national costume.
