Bridge over Mortimer rd. Former Langsett Railway, Stocksbridge Sheffield. April 2018

HISTORY:

Currently unavailable.

In the meantime, here's how you can access this obscure little gem.

DIRECTIONS:

Approaching from Stocksbridge, turn right off the Stocksbridge bypass into the driveway leading to the Equi-Trek works plant. Turn left after approximately 25 yards onto a narrow path amongst the trees. This the route of the trackbed and is pretty much indicated by the lower embankment slightly further along. The railway route follows for 2 miles north very closely alongside the bypass at all times.

For midway access to the railway path, remain on the bypass and take the right turn onto Mortimer Road at Midhopestones. Pass under the railway bridge and then turn left upwards onto the track bed and continue on the right or left.

The trackbed is very muddy in places although at one point a trail of wooden pallets have been left arranged to step across. The old line pass through a farm before following a hardened embankment and into a cutting and through a short tunnel beneath the bypass. The pathway then emerges up a steep ramp alongside a treatment works plant near Langsett, from here the main road can be rejoined.
