This guy presided over a family picnic. I'm simply not used to bald eagles sticking around in one spot for a few minutes, let alone hours at a time. So my desperate attitude toward capturing images of bald eagles translated to taking the same photo over and over again expecting this guy to leave, but he never did. So I picked an image of him grooming while kids were playing and screaming in the water beneath him.
As a child growing up in the era affected by DDT in the Pacific Northwest, seeing a bald eagle was extremely rare. Since the banning of DDT in the US the population of almost all large bird species have increased. I never saw bald eagles in the area this photo was taken when I was a child. Now one hangs out there all afternoon. Yay environmentalism.
