So I decided to test something out here. I've been spending quite a bit of time learning, testing, trial and error... with my 400 f5.6. I decided to try my canon 70-200mm f/2.8l is ii usm which is very sharp, with my 2x teleconverter and see what it yielded at 400mm @ 5.6

To my surprise, it actually had a better DOF and was nicely sharp and contrasty. I'm not sure how viable this combo would be in use all day, especially since I typically need longer lengths, but it was interesting to see how the quality was. I did not see any real loss in quality.

I've had my eye on the 300mm f2.8 for a while. Physically, I cannot do the 400 f2.8 for events. The 300 appeals because I can get 300, 420 and 600 with my teleconverters and the quality of the 300 is better than the 70-200... which is already good. Decisions-decisions...

Had to do a healthy crop but it's still 3792 pixels wide and I think the quality held-up pretty well. Might try another one and crop closer to see what detail is available.
