7 Famous Fashion Designers

By our guest author.

Pioneers and talented artists, these famous fashion designers are the ones who inspire me the most in my work and in my aspirations. They taught me that having your own personality and vision in your designs and creations is not a bad thing; in fact it’s a pre-requisite for fulfilling and rewarding work. I know that some of them were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, some were not (McQueen being the notable exception), but in all cases, they had the cojones to be different to the rest, and made the fashion world a better place as a result. Here are my 7 favorites. Who are yours?

My definitive list of famous fashion designers.

Hey, I know this is not a list of all the designers out there, but the ones who I think are the biggest movers in contemporary fashion – alive or dead. They are the ones I look to when I sometimes lack the courage to put my own ideas into action. So, in no particular order:

1. John Paul Gaultier

An icon in a sailor suit and cap, Gaultier’s constant drive and innovation, along with his own quirky style, ensure that he is always fresh and at the forefront of fashion. As he can always be called upon to bring true novelty and a new take on almost any style, his talents have been called upon for many different films (remember 5th Element?) and celebrity get-ups like Madonna’s iconic pointy-breated corset.

2. Karl Lagerfeld

Although Karl hasn’t changed his own personal style in decades, including high-collared and long-cuffed laser cut shirts and suits, that does not stop him from constantly being at the cutting edge (forgive the pun) of fashion. There is always something fresh and funky in his collections, he can work in almost any medium or style, and he can always be counted on to bring modernity and futurism to the catwalk. For me, Chanel trainers were a revolution.

3. Marc Jacobs

Marc is an inspiration for me on many levels. He kind of broke the mold as he was virtually hired straight out of fashion school, with success after success very early on in his career. I love what he did with staid old Louis Vuitton – turning it from the old dinosaur it was to the avant-garde brand it is today. Like the other fashion designers I list here, he has his own recognisable style, rebellious and cool.

4. Tom Ford

Tom Ford is a real talent – actor, director, and amazing fashion designer. He was once employed by Marc Jacobs, and like him, injected new blood into an old brand – in this case Gucci.

5. Stella McCartney

You could say that Stella was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, but for some creative people, easy access to money and comfort could make you complacent and lazy. Not so for Stella McCartney – pioneering, clean cuts of modern elegance grace her catwalk shows – and not a spot of fur or leather in sight.

6. Alexander McQueen

Of course. Wow.

I know it’s all been said before but the man was a genius. He made stuff that was genuinely, massively, shoutingly, new. Even old stuff was new (his monarchy styles brought into the 20th Century for instance). And a real rags-to-riches story too. The intricacy of his work was mind-blowing, futuristic, and envelope pushing. It’s such a shame that he had to leave us so soon.

7. Alexander Wang

I think that Wang must be extremely disciplined as well as being talented. I mean, it must be easy to fly off on a tangent with success and money behind you, but Wang always stays true to his form: strikingly modern, almost brutishly-sharp cuts, fresh styles, and not afraid to be different. The play of his textures and materials is a delight to see.
