Stranger #55 - Jean

'Never worry about the past. Never worry about the future. Just live for the day and be happy.'

That was the advice I got from this stylish, sparkly, beautiful 91 year old lady that I met in Newcastle today.

We made each other's day, I think.

I love these connections with strangers. Jean was a nurse in the war in South Shields before marrying and having 4 strapping lads. For Christmas, her twin grandson's gave her tickets to a Tchaikovsky concert at the Royal Albert Hall. She was really looking forward to it. 'I love a good orchestra,' she smiled.

Jean misses her husband, who passed away 20 years ago, but her large family adore her, and make a big fuss of her when they can. I can see why they would. She was absolutely lovely.

She told me that her family would love her to be closer to them in the south of England, but she said that the North East was her home because 'I know that if I smile at someone up here, they'll smile back.'

After this wonderful encounter, I smiled all the way up Northumberland Street.

Thank you so much for giving me your time today, Jean. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you! I hope your family find the photo on here. I can send the original if someone sends me an email address via private messages :)

Jean is #55 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
