Crash

I was in two minds whether to post this photo or not, but it explains why we did not use the car for the second half of our holiday, and didn’t venture as far from our base in Ambleside as we originally planned, although having said that it was never our intention to use the car much this week.

This is the A593 north of Coniston. Although an ‘A’ road it is fairly narrow in parts, and frequently hilly and twisting. The reason I was able to take this photo at all was that Jackie was driving so that I could take photos out of the window if I saw anything of interest. The camera was in my hand as I saw the approaching car jump in the air, swivel round and land on its side in front of us. Due to the bend in the road I had a fraction of a second warning to tell Jack to ‘look out!’. If we had been that little bit nearer….

On braking hard and stopping Jackie immediately phoned 999 while I tried to ascertain exactly where the hell we were. People from the car following were already running to the car on its side. I think seeing the car overturning before us led to us being temporarily in a state of mild shock. I would hasten to add the female driver and her very young son passenger were shaken but unharmed. She seemed more concerned about her car. She borrowed Jack’s phone to call her husband to tell him she was OK but needed a lift home!

From my perusal of the scene and the damage to that oak tree and her car I believe she may have been distracted and hit the tree truck more than a glancing blow that she maintained happened. It took the police and the fire brigade [the car was leaking fuel] more than 20 minutes to reach the scene. The road was obviously blocked for some time after that. Anyway, from then on we didn’t use the car again until it was time to depart for home. We used the ferries instead.
