Ye Olde Butchers

This is Bayle Street that connects the current main shopping area with the village-like community and ancient church on what is known as The Bayle. The Old High street is off to the right and leads down to the harbour area.

The building on the corner with the Old High Street was once Menge Smith Oil Merchants. I guess that’s why those large pots are on the wall. The building next to it, the blue one, was once occupied by Thomas Fuller Taylor who started trading from this shop in 1877 as a dairyman. Sometime between 1878 and 1882 he started the pork butchery business. He was succeeded in 1927 by his grandson Thomas Henry Taylor who died in 1945 after which his son Tom carried on the business. Tom shut shop in November 1973 due to the decline in trade.

Location in business is everything, and whether a particular place is good for trade often changes over time. This shop found itself somewhat detached from the main shopping area, and it seems nobody wanted it for a normal trade but somebody decided to open it as a witches’ ‘coven’. I doubt they made much money, witches being in short supply these days and the premises were converted into living accommodation in 1997, though thankfully the pigs’ heads were retained. This former shop and the one next door painted the same colour now form one residence.
