Bulgaria, 1993

Through a combination of circumstances, particularly an injured foot, I’m spending more time looking through the archives than taking photos right now. I’ve always liked this one of my eldest daughter taken in Bulgaria a couple of years after the ruling Communist Party gave up its monopoly on power. Sozopol in 1993 had no hotels and few British visitors which was fine by us. We lodged with a local family which was the only way you could stay there then. As I hinted in my previous photo , sometimes you view photos of long ago with regret and that’s certainly the case here, but not because Emily has grown into a lovely woman with three, going on four children. No, it’s because THAT Sozopol no longer exists because for many years now it’s been ‘discovered’ as a holiday destination and has, in my opinion, been totally spoilt. But that’s just my old fashioned outlook; if you like ‘all-inclusive’ hotels and rows of shops selling tourist tat you will be happy.
