Times Past

I took this photo in the early 1960s with my Yashica Lynx rangefinder 35mm camera. It was my first ‘real’camera, and I bought it on what was known as Hire Purchase back in the days before credit cards. I think it cost about £50 back then, a lot of money when my salary was 5 guineas a week out of which I had to fund my fares, my correspondence course and accountancy books, and my food and lodging [to my mother].

Sadly, both my parents in the photo and the dog and the ancient water fountain are all long gone now. I was hoping that the fountain had been preserved, but I can’t see it on Google Maps. It was next to the wall of Saint Mary le Bow church in the City where my father would pound the streets as a ‘commercial traveller’.

Oh, and I still have the camera. They just don’t build them like that anymore, it’s still a beautiful thing [to me anyway].
