Wingwalkers

By coincidence John Lawrence has just posted a photo of these wingwalkers taking part in the Eastbourne Air Show this month, so it’s nice to know they are still going strong, though I suspect the wingwalkers themselves are not the same as I saw back in 2014, although the pilots are probably the same.

The planes are Boeing Stearman biplanes with 450hp Pratt and Whitney radial engines and have been specially adapted for wingwalking under Civil Aviation Authority regulations. The wingwalkers are secured in to the wingwalking rig on the top wing by a Civil Aviation Authority approved safety harness. The harness is fastened and then secured by a second locking system called a locking pin. This locking pin protects the harness from accidental opening.

The interesting thing is that if you are over the age of 18, under 6ft 2”, and weigh up to 14st you can have a go yourself. For less than £400 you can experience “Standing on the top wing of our 1940’s biplane, your adrenaline will hit new levels with this incredible flying experience…. Experience our mind blowing full aerobatic wingwalk, for the adrenaline rush our Professional Team thrive on during their performances. Try a barrel roll, stall turn, Cuban eight and loop. Remember, all your nerves will disappear as soon as the wheels leave the ground”

I can assure you MY nerves would NOT disappear, so family if you are reading this, NO!
