Framlingham Castle [3]

Originally various buildings were built around the curtain wall, but now the largest building remaining inside the castle walls is Framlingham Castle’s workhouse, which was built on the remains of the great hall in the old structure in 1729.

Perhaps the castle is best known for being the place where the Catholic Princess Mary Tudor was first proclaimed Queen of England. She had fled to the castle on receiving news that the Duke of Northumberland was moving to secure the throne for the Protestant Lady Jane Grey, his daughter-in-law. Whilst gathering her troops and supporters Mary received the news that Northumberland had surrendered and she had been proclaimed England’s first ruling queen.

You can walk around the top of the walls from where I took this photo.
