Folkestone Downs
This is the view from our upstairs window of part of Folkestone Downs, an ancient chalk grassland rich in wild flowers and insects such as butterflies. It has been designated as a site of European importance for wildlife, especially for its orchids. Round Hill was ‘in the way’ of the route to the new Channel Tunnel , so they bored a pair of road tunnels through the chalk hill which took three years until completion in 1993. Structural failures in and around the tunnels have caused the A20 to be closed in this area numerous times. It is, strangely enough, known as Roundhill Tunnel.
