Eswatini

Touring South Africa by coach was a memorable experience – there was so much to see just peering out of the coach window. I developed a technique whereby I always had the camera ready to shoot thanks to its articulated LCD.

One of our tour days involved leaving South Africa for a while and cutting across one of the few remaining monarchies in Africa, Swaziland, which I guess was in the way.

When I posted photos I took in March 2018 I was correct in calling the country Swaziland, but on April 19, 2018, King Mswati III announced that he was changing the official name of the country from the Kingdom of Swaziland to the Kingdom of Eswatini. The country covers an area of 17,364 km², it is one of Africa's smallest countries, slightly larger than half the size of Belgium, or slightly smaller than the U.S. state of New Jersey.

The people we met and saw along the way all seemed very happy which is incredible given their low life expectancy and increasing levels of poverty, sexual violence, HIV/AIDS, alcohol and cannabis abuse, and tuberculosis.
