The Ashby Canal
If you want peace and quiet, the Ashby canal is ideal. It is named for Ashby-de-la-Zouch, even though the canal never reached the town. It winds peacefully through the countryside for almost the whole of its remaining *22-mile length. Hedgerows and reeds add to a green landscape, rich in wildlife, including herons, kingfishers and moorhens.
This is bridge 28 near the village of Dadlington. We didn't get off the boat though. The only canal side village we explored was Stoke Golding.
* A small section at the north end has been restored and is navigable, but it is not yet connected to the main stretch.
