Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
In the photo one’s eye is immediately drawn to the 42 meter high oval dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel that dominates both the city skyline and Marsamxett Harbour. It is higher than the steeple of the immediately adjacent Anglican Cathedral in Valletta. The church forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage site which includes the entire city.
The first church on the site was built around 1570 and given to the Carmelites in the 17th century, hence its present patronage. During World War II the church was badly damaged and rebuilt between 1958 to 1981.
