Fairbanks

This is Fairbanks, the largest city in the Interior region of Alaska. 2018 estimates put the population of the city proper at 31,516. You really get the feeling that this is a frontier town. The men drive pickups, shoot furry animals and vote for Trump. For a couple of reasons, after a while I didn’t feel completely safe walking around on my own out of the main town. At the time I didn’t know that Fairbanks' crime rate (violent and property crimes combined) is higher than Alaska's average, which in turn is higher than the U.S. average. It’s particularly dangerous for women, and ranks as the third most dangerous U.S. city for women with a rate of rape more than double the national average:

What surprises me more, bearing in mind its frontier location, is that in 2018 Fairbanks was rated by the American Lung Association as having the highest levels of particle pollution anywhere in America. Apparently, this is due to wood stove and hydronic heater pollution. They managed to slip down to third this year, but all the same….
