Public Safety
I felt uneasy walking around parts of Cape Town. It proved impossible to enjoy walking around the older city area because we were seriously plagued by a series of beggars. In the end we walked towards a police officer that I had spied and they melted away. It’s not comfortable to have a boy clinging on to your arm telling you he is starving, so please give some money. You feel guilty in ignoring them, but if you give anything you know what will happen. So we gave up sightseeing in the city streets which is why I have few photos of the city centre.
This is a pedestrian walkway that was well used and well policed by public safety officers. You see them on a lot of street corners, but not when you need one of course.
We were warned not to walk around at night because ‘nobody walks at night, they use their cars to go anywhere’. This is partly due to Cape Town city centre having few residential areas, though much is being built by the canal to the waterfront. All behind security gates of course.
“Cape Town is a paradise for the minority, but I could hope for a city where everyone has access to the same opportunities that I have… Mandela may have postponed revolution – but for how much longer is the question.” - Heinrich Wolff
