Porto
Just for a change, and a bit of an experiment, we decided to swop a bus or a car for a boat, and take a leisurely cruise down the Douro River, starting and finishing in Porto. And having spent countless years navigating boats on the canals and rivers of England and Wales, I thought it would be nice to be just a passenger.
Porto is Portugal’s second largest city after Lisbon. The city is set on the northern bank of the Douro River. This is the Ribeira district - The oldest district of the city which is filled with ancient houses, narrow cobbled streets and numerous family owned restaurants, cafes and bars.
Probably Portugal’s most famous export, port wine, is named after Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the packaging, transport and export of the fortified wine. Obviously, we had to check it out…..
