Roman Bridge
The city of Salamanca was founded in the 4th century BC by the Celts who fortified the area to protect their territories along the Duero River. But they had hardly settled in [historically] when Hannibal [of Elephant fame] and his Carthaginian forces besieged the area and settled in. And they in their turn were expelled by the Romans who called the place Helmantica. The city lay on a Roman road, known as the Vía de la Plata [Road of the Silver], which connected it with Emerita Augusta (present day Mérida) to the south and Asturica Augusta (present-day Astorga) to the north. The wide Roman bridge dates from the 1st century, and was a part of this road.
