Approaching the Carrapatelo lock
About 10.50 in the morning, now under a clear blue sky, we approached the Carrapatelo Dam lock. This was the first dam to be built on the Douro River. It was built between 1965 and 1972. The lock of navigation of this dam is about 85m long and 12m wide. The difference in the water level of this lock is about 36m and it makes it the deepest lock in Europe. Carrapatelo Dam is 57 m tall (height above foundation) and 400 m long, with a crest altitude of 55 m. Like the other dams, it provides hydroelectric power.
