South Bank
Walking along the South Bank in an easterly direction I saw a number of posters attached to the trees here. They warned that these trees would be cut down if the Garden Bridge project went ahead.
This bridge, initially devised by actress and campaigner Joanna Lumley, would span 367 metres from the South Bank to Temple on the north side of the river and feature 270 trees and thousands of plants. The idea apparently was to improve pedestrian links across the river. But it’s a controversial plan which has already cost £37.4 million of public money. Furthermore, what started life as a project costing an estimated £60 million is likely to end up costing over £200 million, the taxpayer ending up paying the lion’s share.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, appears to have gone off the whole affair and it remains to be seen whether it is ever built.
[The Flickr map insists on describing the location as Holborn, even though the photo is located correctly south of the river. So far as I know, Holborn has not moved!]
