Dray Walk

A scene of young people enjoying themselves on a balmy summer’s evening in London. Not something you would have done in Victorian times, for this was then a notoriously poor area with slum housing and the area where Jack the Ripper carried out his grisly murders.

On the left is The Old Truman Brewery, which now houses a vibrant market where up-and-coming designers set up shop every Sunday selling a unique variety of clothes, handbags and jewellery. It is also the site of fine art and fashion exhibitions. Brewing came to Brick Lane before 1680, with water drawn from deep wells. One brewer was Joseph Truman, first recorded in 1683.

This area centred around Brick Lane once housed a sizeable Jewish community, but now it is the hub of London's Bangladeshi community. But as well as loads of curry houses in the area, there are trendy clubs and bars.
