The Amalfi Coast from Ravello

The Amalfi Coast is located on the relatively steep southern shore of the Sorrentine Peninsula. The terrain leaves little room for rural and agricultural territories, most crops are grown on terraces. The only land route to the Amalfi Coast is the 40 kilometres long Strada Statale 163 which runs along the coastline from the town of Vietri sul Mare in the east to Positano in the west. Only experienced coach drivers are allowed to use this road due to problems in the past created by drivers who were not familiar with the roads and the frequent hair-pin bends.

The Amalfi Coast is known for its production of limoncello liqueur. The species of lemon with thick rinds, known as sfusato amalfitano in Italian, are grown in terraced gardens along the entire coast between February and October.
