Herculaneum

This view of Herculaneum gives you some idea of how much ash and pumice covered the town. Back before 79AD it would not have been surrounded by ground [ash and pumice] as it is now. Only a small part of the town has been unearthed. To do more those houses you see in the background will need to be demolished. But currently, there is no money….

The grass area in the foreground would have been the beach level. You can see the alcoves where the people waited to be rescued and where they were vaporised by the pyroclastic surge that overtook the town.

Vesuvius looms behind.
