Beach Nourishment

This photo shows how they are progressing with raising the levels of the seafront site to an acceptable level in preparation for the new development. This is deemed necessary for flood prevention. A lot of material is required for the process of ‘beach nourishment’, as it is called, which can often mean bringing in external materials to the site by road or by sea. However, at Folkestone Seafront they are able to extract the necessary materials from other areas of the site and replace materials with sand from the harbour. The sand that is used to replace the materials is removed from the harbour through dredging. A side benefit of this dredging of the harbour is that the fishing fleet will have longer each side of the tides to enter and leave the harbour.

It is interesting to compare this photo with this one - www.flickr.com/photos/134633393@N02/33763071511/in/album-...
