London Eye at night

The London Eye is just one of the attractions on the South Bank.

I see that this big Ferris wheel is now called the Coca-Cola London Eye. I prefer the old name, the Millennium Wheel, though granted that’s difficult to get your tongue around. Well, the least you can do is omit the drinks advert.

It was built to celebrate the new millennium and, like its cousin the Millennium Dome, was only supposed to be there until 2005. But it proved so popular that it has remained on the riverfront ever since and will stay until at least 2025. It also provides a great backdrop for the New Year fireworks display!

At 135 metres, it was the world's largest Ferris wheel until 2006, when it was surpassed by the Nanchang Star in Nanchang (China). In 2008, the Singapore Flyer marked a new record, standing 541 feet (165 m) tall.
