Turnagain Arm Flats
The sprawling, sometimes four-mile-wide flats of Turnagain Arm seem to stretch like a plain to the opposite shores of Cook Inlet, where the Kenai mountains abruptly stop. The mudflats along the Turnagain Arm have quicksand-like conditions. It is extremely dangerous to walk on the beach or mudflats in this area. We were told to watch out for Beluga Whales but we didn’t see any. Apparently in the summer, pods migrate into the Arm to feed, but the population has been declining drastically in recent years, alarming scientists. And disappointing us…….
