Saltwood was once an important Manor.The first Rector of the church was Walter De Gray, who was Chancellor of England under King John in 1207 and also Archbishop of York. There is a castle in Saltwood - it is known as the site where the plot was hatched to assassinate Archbishop of Canterbury,Thomas Becket (1118–1170).
