The Turnagain Arm from the Seward Highway
The 50 mile long fjord in the photo is known as Turnagain Arm. It was given this name by Captain Cook in 1778 after he was forced to turn around after discovering that it was impossible to navigate a sea route between Cook inlet and the fabled Northwest Passage.
The road from which the photo was taken is the Seward Highway that connects Anchorage with Seward and follows the fjord’s north shore through Chugach State Park, giving great views of the Kenai Mountains and the Chugach National Forest.
