Stella Sea Lions, Prince William Sound

They can only rest on this rock at low tide - at high tide it will be covered.

Males grow to about 1250 pounds while females reach half that size. Steller's sea lions, named after the famous naturalist, George Steller, inhabit much of the southern coastline of Alaska. They are social animals, congregating in groups at various beach or rock "haul out" locations. The population of sea lions in western Alaska have been in decline, and this remains a mystery to scientists, trying to determine the cause.
